WHAT IS HISTORY?

More Than Just What We’re Taught

When most people think of history, they picture long lists of dates, wars, and rulers.
They remember classrooms filled with facts to memorize, timelines to mug up, and chapters that end with questions we answer only for marks.

But here’s something I’ve come to realize:

History isn’t just what we are taught in institutions.

It’s not limited to what’s printed in textbooks or what’s tested in exams.
It lives in our streets, in our memories, in our families, and in the stories we tell — and the ones we forget.

Even a moment ago — a second that just passed — is now entered the Special imaginary  Room,
And everything or anything  that comes out of this  room will be called the HISTORY.

So, What Is History, Really?

At its core, History is not just about the human being, everything has its history from an insect which can barely be seen by naked eyes from everything we see today.

In desi words we say “History kisi ke baap ki bapauti nahi hai”

Wait wait do not wonder why am i using such words,

In simple words what I want to say is History is not about a particular person or thing rather it is of everything.

By the time everything (Animate or Inanimate) we see is not this much from the start it has come so far and has a long journey, Which I call the HISTORY.

History is not just the past. It is the thread that connects yesterday to today.

It teaches us how societies grew, how power shifted, and how ideas took root and changed the world.

  What History Is Not

  • It’s not just kings, wars, and conquests.

  • It’s not only about “great men” or those in power.

  • It’s not limited to what institutions choose to highlight.

And it is definitely not a dead subject. (hum hon na hon history will stay forever)

Then what is it?

Though I have  already mentioned above, what were we taught from starting in our classes? The evolution of a man from a monkey? Do you really think it is true? TBH I do not think so. We are taught that we became humans from a monkey (when there was nothing like science) . The world has come so far. Can the science or technologies which have developed in this modern era change a monkey to a human being?

Types of History?

Mainly of two types — Useful or Not Useful (Active or Passive)

How to consider if it is useful or not?

As I just said history is everything, the second which has  just passed the moment you moved on to this line, the line above became the history THAT DOESN’T REALLY MEAN HUME SAB YAAD RKHNA HAI.

Have you ever heard about active or passive history?

Lemme tell you the History we are being taught is the Passive(JINSE HUMEIN MATLAB NAHI UN DESHON, UN LOGON KA ITIHAS HUME PADHAYA JARAHA HAI) and the Active(THE ONE WE NEED TO KNOW,WE SHOULD KNOW—  THE REAL HISTORY OF INDIA/BHARAT) one got dead gradually.

Every Moment Is History in Motion

The second you finish reading this sentence — it becomes the past.
That makes it part of your history.

  • The message you regret not sending — history.

  • The protest you attended last year — history.

  • The photo in your gallery of a happy day — history.

History is not just in grand events — it’s also in the ordinary.

HISTORY IS A DEEP OCEAN.

🔗 Why History Still Matters Today

History impresses everybody out there.

See tell me one thing, What if you don’t know what your name is? Who are your parents? Where is your house? Where do you belong to?

Would you be able to know the next step? If you don’t know where your home is, where will you go? You’ll Wander here to there.

That’s why it is important to know your history so that you don’t wander in present or in your future

That’s why THE  HISTORY STILL MATTERS.

Why I Chose to Study and Write History

I used to be a student who never found History interesting by the end of my high school even though it was one of my main subjects in class 12th. But the time I got admission in Delhi University, Unfortunately I got History as my core subject in my graduation and during the exams when I had to read the topics for the exam I started finding them interesting and thought why did i not pay attention while the professor was teaching this and then I found they made the HISTORY boring The History was never boring you just need someone who doesn’t complicate it, Even it is the most interesting subject you just need to listen or read the story and that’s it. Now you’re ready for your exam. And somewhere I found that I love to know what happened in our past. If the POV of the court poet was this towards the king  then what would be the POV of ordinary people whose views were never mentioned anywhere.

In the desire to understand—  Why are things the way they are?

History is giving me  more than knowledge —Giving me questions.
And slowly, the meaning too.

Conclusion: The Past Is Not Gone

“History is not the past. It is the present. We carry our history with us.” – James Baldwin

Every moment becomes the past.
But that past is not lost — it shapes how we think, what we believe, and where we go next.

So the next time someone tells you that history is boring, irrelevant, or over — remember:

It is not behind us. It is within us. We just need someone to tell us the way it is.

Thank you for reading!
